Lars spent his life working on everything he does with his mother Shirley Tetens. Taffy was one more thing Lars learned to make from his mother at a very young age. This was more of a fun thing for the family to play with. Lars came up with new flavors all the time on his trips with his mother to the Jersey Shore where everyone was making Salt Water Taffy.
Now we should start this off by saying Salt Water Taffy is not made from salt water. You do need some salt and some water to make a batch of taffy, however, the name "Salt Water Taffy" doesn't come from the ingredients they're made from.
No one knows where the name "Salt Water Taffy" came from. It appears that there are more myths and legends concerning taffy than actual fact. The most popular story of origin involves a shopkeeper on the Atlantic City Boardwalk named David Bradley. A tidal surge from a summer storm in 1883 swamped Bradley's store and buried his inventory in sea water. As he was cleaning up the following day a girl walked into his store and asked for a bag of taffy. Bradley was supposed to have sarcastically invited his young customer to help herself to his "Salt Water Taffy". Bradley's mother thought his grumpy remark to be catchy and encouraged him to begin selling his candy as "Salt Water Taffy".
It was Joseph Fralinger's idea to sell the candy to bathers and strollers along the Boardwalk in boxes that could be carted home as a souvenir. He was so sure of his idea that he purchased 200 boxes and filled them with his slender, finger-sized logs of taffy. He started selling his souvenir boxes on a Saturday evening and by Sunday morning he had sold out his entire supply to departing vacationers. In another taffy legend, Enoch James migrated from the Midwest to Atlantic City to find his fortune in taffy. Atlantic City directories show no listing of any store selling "Salt Water Taffy" until 1889.
Now you can capture the history of traditional Salt Water Taffy by enjoying Lars Tetens’ Salt Water Taffy. As with all of his products, Lars strived to produce the best tasting taffy on the market. A combination of using more flavor than sugar, stretching the taffy twice as much as other brands and that extra bit of love passed down from Lars' mother Shirley all culminate in the best tasting taffy you'll ever have - Lars Tetens’ Salt Water Taffy. So when you purchase your next supply of Lars Tetens' Salt Water Taffy, you're getting more than just taffy. You're actually taking home a Jersey Shore tradition which has now existed for well over 100 years with a little legend and a taste of American pop culture.

Lars Tetens childhood was what you’d call a little less than ordinary. While his peers were learning their ABC’s, Lars began training in martial and internal arts. When he was five, without any formal training, he began painting, building furniture and he stated on the road to becoming a master chef, creating exotic dishes that delighted even master chefs and at 8 was already creating exotic spiced chocolate truffles and chocolates that will blow away most master chocolatiers. By the time he turned seven he was designing and making clothing and skateboards. His cigars brought him worldwide recognition using an ancient cigar making technique that dates back thousand of years. He also began selling his paintings at seventeen and since then he’s had a consistent following of those who have the wherewithal to be collectors of his works. His handmade and hand tooled platinum automatic watch movements are just another innovation in another industry that Lars is exploring. Lars has always been a big fan of science and technology so when he and Eddie Lakata, best friends since Lars was twelve, started working on a motor controller over fifteen years ago no one was surprised. Also soon to be released to the public, the most exotic and tasty beef sausage you’ve ever had, and the most delicious and unique chocolate bars you’ve ever sank your teeth into. Stay tuned for more innovation coming from Lars Tetens.
